Commissioner of the Revenue

The Commissioner of the Revenue is a constitutional officer established by the Constitution of Virginia and serves as the chief local assessing authority for taxes and licenses authorized by state law and local ordinance. This elected position was originally created by the Virginia General Assembly in 1786.

The Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office is responsible for managing real estate records, including maintaining ownership information, processing recorded plat changes, and updating county land parcel maps. The office administers the Land Use Program, Tax Relief for the Elderly and Disabled Program, and the Veterans Tax Relief Program. Responsibilities also include the assessment of all Personal Property—such as vehicles, boats, trailers, and mobile homes—as well as Business Personal Property, machinery and tools, and the Bank Franchise Tax. In addition, the office oversees the administration of the Transient Occupancy Tax and the Food and Beverage Tax.

The mission of the Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is to serve the citizens of Fluvanna County by:

  • Fairly and equitably identifying all sources of revenue the County is entitled to according to the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the County of Fluvanna.
  • Providing timely, efficient, and courteous service to all citizens.
  • Professionally managing all tax assessment records.
