EMS Cost Recovery Program

Two ambulances parked in a parking lot

On March 18, 2015, the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors adopted Chapter 8, Section 8-6 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Cost Recovery, of the Fluvanna County Code to defray costs and improve services associated with providing EMS transport services by collecting a user fee for emergency ambulance transports.

Fluvanna County’s EMS Cost Recovery program is a compassionate model that collects money for system operations from the people who receive services, with the vast majority of the revenues collected directly from Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies.

The rate charged for transport services depends on the level of medical service required by the patient, the level of expertise of the responders (EMS, Paramedic, etc.), and the number of miles the patient travels in the ambulance.

Current Fees (125% of Medicare Allowable Charges): (Effective January 1, 2024)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS):                $ 680.35
  • Advanced Life Support 1 (ALS1):    $ 807.91
  • Advanced Life Support 2 (ALS2):    $ 1,169.36
  • Mileage (All Service Levels):           $ 16.91 per loaded mile.

because of a lack of insurance or an inability to pay.

NOTE:  Are you (or a household member) a Fire, Rescue, or Law Enforcement person currently volunteering in or employed by Fluvanna County?  If so, please fill out the top portion of the Ambulance Fee Waiver Form and return it to the Fluvanna County Finance Dept.  Any balances for an ambulance transport will be waived.
