The County of Fluvanna is recruiting for a full-time Deputy Treasurer to support the County’s financial and strategic operations.

This is a full-time position that performs well-defined clerical, fiscal, and accounting-related work in support of the Treasurer's Office.  Work involves accepting payments on personal property real estate taxes, and utility accounts; issuing dog tags; and accepting other miscellaneous revenues.  Responsible for balancing daily receipts, researching accounts, preparing a variety of correspondence, and protecting the confidentiality of sensitive information regarding taxpayer accounts.  Must be able to respond to problems and complaints and deal with taxpayers efficiently and effectively.  Must exercise independent judgment and initiative.  The employee is responsible for performing a variety of duties to assist co-workers.

Essential Functions:

  • Handles large sums of money in the collection and processing of payments for Personal Property, real estate taxes, dog tags, utility bills, and other fees
  • Answers call from citizens, answers questions, and provides information; greets and assists walk-in customers
  • Counts and verifies cash and checks, balances cash drawer daily
  • Checks for paid or delinquent real estate taxes for title companies and attorneys
  • Provides correct, complete, and concise information to taxpayers, explains procedures, refers taxpayers to other county departments, and maintains confidentiality of taxpayer information
  • Resolves issues with payment postings in the enterprise management system
  • Coaches and mentors Deputy I employees and trains new staff
  • Processes office and other county departments' deposits for BRINKS pick up. Assist in mailing real estate and personal property bills
  • Receives and processes incoming and outgoing mail
  • Assists in processing delinquent tax billings
  • Assists with all office filing and record-keeping
  • Performs the daily close-out
  • Receives, sorts, and delivers mail from the post office and Dropbox
  • Electronically uploads positive pay files to the bank
  • Has access to and serves as a security officer for DMV
  • Assists with processing outgoing mail, filing record retention or destruction
  • Assists in collection efforts
  • Assists Treasurer on various projects as needed

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

General knowledge of the laws, ordinances, and regulations governing the operations of the Treasurer’s Office; general knowledge of business and office practices; basic knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of accounting; ability to analyze and interpret fiscal and accounting data and to prepare appropriate statements and reports; ability to operate standard office; word processing and data entry equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; demonstrated ability to maintain positive customer interactions in a fast-paced environment; ability to lead and mentor co-workers.

Acceptable Education, Experience, and Training:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to High School graduation and 3 years of experience in a treasurer’s office, business office, or financial institution setting.

Working Conditions and Physician Requirements:

  • Office environment exposure to computer screens; sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Must have the ability to occasionally lift, push/pull, and hold/carry 30 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to frequently stand and sit, and occasionally walk over flat and uneven terrain.
  • Must be available to work some weekends and evenings for presentations, training, and meetings. 
  • Must possess an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Local travel is required for meetings and presentations.

The starting hourly rate is $17.62 to $20.62-DOQ
