Fluvanna County, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Assistant Director for our Public Works Department.  Under general supervision of the Public Works Director, the Assistant Director provides day-to-day direction, management, and oversight of the Building Maintenance, Grounds Maintenance, and Custodial Service divisions.  The Assistant Director also performs project management duties: oversees small tenant improvement and remodel projects, and prepares written and verbal technical reports to the Public Works Director, County Administrator, and external agencies, as required.  The incumbent supports the Public Works Director in oversight of the entire department by assisting with personnel issues, budgeting, strategic planning, and representation on various boards and committees.

The Public Works Department consists of approximately 22 staff members and encompasses the operational areas of building and grounds maintenance, custodial services, water and wastewater systems, irrigation, solid waste and recycling, and collaboration with VDOT on road maintenance and related projects. The County is embarking on several major projects over the next few years that will have lasting impact and provide opportunities for professional growth.

To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will have Education, training, and/or work experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with major course work in engineering, public administration, business administration or a related field and bring 3 or more years of progressively responsible leadership experience in facility maintenance/management, public works, or similar field. Two years of administrative and supervisory experience is required.  Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered.

Salary range begins at $50,519 annually, and is negotiable depending upon education, licensure, certifications, and experience. This is an FLSA exempt position with full County benefits. Incumbent may be called to respond for emergency situations at any time, including weather and other building emergencies.  Position open until filled.  EOE
