Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office Launches Reserve Deputy Program

Palmyra, Va. – Nearly 15 area residents assembled Tuesday evening to become a part of the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Deputy Program.

“Tonight each candidate embarks on an exciting journey toward a career in law enforcement,” said Fluvanna County Sheriff Eric B. Hess. “If you persevere and complete your training, you will serve our community as a sworn law enforcement deputy providing our office with the expertise and manpower needed to augment our full time staff.”

Volunteers provide a vital economic and social benefit by giving of their most precious resource – their time – to make the community stronger and safer, Hess said.

“Several of our deputies are serving this great Nation in the military and we must fill the gap here at home,” Hess said. “Your leadership and selfless service inspires life-long values of helping others, and we thank you for being a part of this program.”

Reserve Deputy candidates must volunteer a minimum of 10 hours a month, attend all in-service training, and purchase their own uniforms and equipment, said Captain Thomas Brennan, Chief Deputy.

“Being a part of this program is a deep commitment not only to this office, but to the community we serve. The instruction will be enlightening and interesting but what you learn here goes far beyond the classroom,” Brennan said. “It’s rewarding to invest in our community by caring for and protecting the people who live here.”

Volunteers who share a passion to protect and serve the community through law enforcement have a unique calling, said Captain Von Hill, Chief of Administrative Operations.

“It’s challenging at times to accomplish our mission because we’re a small agency,” Hill said. “Volunteers are our heroes because through your commitment and support we can get the job done. Volunteering time and talent speaks volumes of your character and we’re honored to have you as part of our team.”

Engineers, firefighters, health care providers, paralegals, and first responders are only a few of the professions represented in this class but the one thing they all share is the desire to help others.

“My brother who is in law enforcement inspired me to use my engineering expertise to help the Sheriff’s Office solve crimes,” said Thomas Reich, a mechanical design engineer. “By using 3-D modeling software we can re-create a crime scene and obtain forensic evidence such as bullet trajectory or point of entry saving time and money in an investigation.”
Frank Signoretti, a health care provider of 25 years and Chaplain for FCSO, said he has a desire to help others through service.

“I care for this team - we’re small but we’re mighty,” Signoretti said. “We support each other and I love working with these guys because we’re a family here.”
