The Marquis de Lafayette visited Fluvanna several times in his life, both during the Revolutionary War and during his US tour in 1824. In the latter instance, he arrived in Columbia and was a guest of John Hartwell Cocke, traversing the county before visiting Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. This highway marker remembers a less joyful time when Lafayette, in command of a small force, encamped along nearby Mechunk Creek to prevent British forces under Lord Cornwallis marching on Charlottesville in June 1781.
